Adoptions

Adoptions are about the only thing that happen in Court where everyone wins, where families gather in Court with cameras and balloons, and where Judges allow their photo to be taken with the families involved.

Adoptions of minors are a two-part process. First, the parental rights of the natural parent(s) need to be terminated by the Court. Sometimes that is easy and sometimes it is difficult or impossible. Then the adoption occurs. Adoption home studies are required so the Judge can have a good understanding of who is adopting the child(ren), and why.

Stepparent adoptions can be handled pretty quickly and efficiently if the non-custodial parent is willing to voluntarily relinquish his or her parental rights.

When foreign born children are adopted by families through an international adoption agency, that adoption typically occurs in the homeland of the child. Then a pretty simple re-adoption occurs here in the local county Court.

Adoptions of adults require no termination of parental rights of the natural parents and require no adoption home studies.
